The CAAS Messier Gallery

During the years from 1758 to 1782 Charles Messier, a French astronomer, compiled a list of approximately 100 diffuse objects that were difficult to distinguish from comets through the telescopes of the day. Primarily a comet hunter, Messier's aim was to catalog the objects that were often mistaken for comets. Messier considered these objects to be pests but for many astronomers the list represents their first major observing challenge. With over 100 objects, the list represents a challenge but one that is perfectly obtainable by any determined amateur.
